As dusk softens the hills of Ciawi and the call to prayer settles gently into the evening air, Ramadan at Damar Restaurant begins not with spectacle, but with quiet intention.
This season, the table is guided by Jawi Peranakan, a cuisine born from centuries of passage and exchange. It carries the imprint of Chinese traders, Malay traditions, Arab spice routes, Indian influences, and the soulful depth of the Indonesian archipelago. Each dish is a conversation between cultures, layered with memory and shaped by time.
At Damar Restaurant, these stories are retold with thoughtful refinement. Aromatic broths simmer slowly, releasing notes of star anise and clove. Rice dishes arrive fragrant and generous, enriched with heritage spices that feel at once familiar and newly discovered. Sambals glow in vivid hues, balancing sweetness with gentle heat. Delicate desserts, scented with coconut and palm sugar, close the evening with grace.
This is not simply a buffet. It is a narrative of migration, harmony, and belonging – expressed through flavour.

At the heart of the buffet, Ayam Buah Keluak speaks of depth and heritage. Kampung chicken is slow-cooked with earthy black keluak nut, Peranakan spices, and coconut milk, resulting in a dish rich in aroma and layered savouriness — complex yet comforting.
In contrast, Asam Pedas Ikan offers brightness. Fresh fish is simmered in a vibrant broth of chilli, belacan, and tamarind, delivering gentle heat and refreshing acidity that awakens the palate.
From the carving station, Daging Sapi Panggang Rempah Nusantara arrives roasted whole with turmeric, coriander, and galangal. Served with Peranakan-style semur sauce and crisp pickled cucumber, it is both bold and composed. Alongside it, Bebek Panggang Bumbu Hitam is marinated in traditional black spices, roasted until the skin turns delicately crisp while the meat remains tender and succulent.
Ceremonial in spirit, Lontong Cap Gomeh brings festivity to the table — a harmonious composition symbolic of abundance and celebration, thoughtfully reimagined for Ramadan.
The evening concludes with sweetness that lingers softly. Kueh Lapis Legit, Kueh Dadar Gulung, Kueh Kosui, and a comforting bowl of Bubur Cha Cha evoke nostalgia through coconut, pandan, and palm sugar — textures layered, sweetness measured, memories gently stirred.
Designed for unhurried gatherings, the Jawi Peranakan Ramadan Iftar Buffet invites families, friends, and colleagues to reconnect around one generous table. The experience unfolds in warm, understated surroundings, where soft lighting and open views toward the hills create a sense of calm intimacy.
Here, sweet meets savoury with quiet precision. Subtle heat lingers beneath depth of flavour. Every element reflects the layered identity of Jawi Peranakan cuisine, a reminder that diversity, when brought together with care, becomes harmony.
As twilight deepens, conversations lengthen. Plates are shared. Gratitude is expressed not only in prayer, but in presence.
